Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Vijitha Herath, has declared the country’s drug crisis a national emergency, stressing the need for urgent and coordinated action.
Speaking at the 74th Anniversary of the Colombo Plan in Colombo, Herath unveiled a multi-faceted strategy spearheaded by President Anand Kumar Dissanayake to combat drug-related challenges.
The strategy includes institutional reforms in law enforcement and intelligence, the use of advanced technology to dismantle drug networks, and anti-corruption measures in the prison system.
It also promotes community-based rehabilitation, youth awareness campaigns, and the involvement of temples, schools, and civil society to instill moral leadership.
Herath emphasized that addressing the drug crisis requires international collaboration and called on the Colombo Plan to take the lead in regional efforts for prevention, education, and rehabilitation.
The event was attended by diplomats, development partners, and representatives from member countries, reflecting the importance of collective commitment.
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung reaffirmed America’s partnership with the Colombo Plan, highlighting ongoing cooperation in enhancing Sri Lanka’s port infrastructure.
