Sri Lanka’s coconut harvest is expected to decline further this year due to adverse weather conditions and aging plantations, officials warned.
As a result, the government has decided to continue importing coconuts to meet domestic demand and stabilize market prices.
The Coconut Development Authority stated that while efforts are underway to boost local production through replanting and modernization programs, short-term supply gaps are inevitable.
Industry experts noted that lower yields could lead to price hikes in the local market, affecting both consumers and manufacturers reliant on coconut-based products.
The government assured that coconut imports would be monitored carefully to ensure quality standards and prevent market disruptions.
