Coastal authority plans crackdown on illegal beach structures, proposes annual fees

The Coastal Conservation Department is planning to introduce annual fines for unauthorized structures built along the beach, including those that have been in existence for more than 25 years.

Director General of the Department, Dr. Turney Pradeep Kumara, told the Daily Mirror that the authorities are considering implementing an annual permit system for such constructions.

He added that while some long-standing structures may be subject to annual fees, illegal buildings located directly on the beach are currently being removed.

“The new programme aims to protect and preserve coastal areas by eliminating unauthorized buildings within the designated protected beach zone,” Dr. Kumara explained.
