The ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ Secretariat has launched a nationwide initiative to improve the attitudes, ethics, and service standards of three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) drivers in the tourism sector.
An initial discussion on the program’s implementation was held on June 18 at the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat. The program aims to train 10,000 three-wheeler drivers engaged in tourism across all nine provinces of the country by the end of the year.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), the initiative—estimated to cost Rs. 25 million—will include ten training sessions per province. These sessions will focus on traffic regulations, ethical conduct, customer service, and responsibilities related to tourism transport.
The program also seeks to raise service quality to meet tourist expectations by encouraging better attitudes, personal hygiene, professionalism, and local area knowledge among drivers. A specialized software application tailored for tourism-sector drivers will be introduced as part of the initiative.
Officials emphasized that the goal is to elevate the standards and professionalism of tuk-tuk services within the tourism industry.
Senior Additional Secretary to the President, S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, along with representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, provincial councils, tourism police, and various taxi driver unions, took part in the event to support and shape the program.
