City mandates microchipping for fogs to curb pet abandonment

The civic body in Chennai, a southern Indian city, has begun microchipping stray dogs to monitor rabies vaccinations and administer birth control treatments.

Authorities plan to extend the microchipping initiative to pet dogs in the coming months as a measure to prevent pet abandonment.

This approach is already being implemented in several countries, including Britain, where microchipping is required for pets before they reach eight weeks old.

Studies have shown that microchipped animals are more likely to be reunited with their owners if they become lost.

In Chennai, the microchipping program is seen as an effort to encourage responsible pet ownership and reduce the number of abandoned dogs.
