CID to investigate mobile phone seizure from high-profile Welikada prison ward

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is set to conduct investigations into the discovery of smartphones and related accessories in a ward at Welikada Prison housing several former ministers.

The seized items are expected to be handed over to the CID within the next two days.

The discovery was made during a special search operation carried out within the prison premises.

According to the Department of Prisons, the ward currently houses former ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Nalin Fernando and S.M. Ranjith, along with Duminda Silva.

The raid uncovered a range of prohibited electronic devices, including smartphones, phone chargers and other mobile accessories.

The Department of Prisons said the devices have been taken into police custody and that strict investigations are underway into how the items entered the prison.
