The CID has launched an investigation into a fake letter titled ‘CONVICTION’ that was circulated on social media, falsely bearing the name and forged signature of Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya.
Police stated that the letter’s design closely resembles official documents, incorporating images similar to the emblems of the Sri Lanka Police, the State, and the Supreme Court.
Despite its official appearance, the letter contains inconsistent and legally unfounded language, according to police.
Authorities also clarified that the organisation mentioned in the letter, ‘Cyber Crime Headquarters, Colombo, Sri Lanka,’ does not exist.
The police confirmed that they have not issued any such statement and described the document as entirely false and misleading.
It is suspected that the letter was intentionally created to mislead the public and damage the reputation of the Sri Lanka Police.
The CID is working to identify those responsible and will take legal action against individuals involved in spreading the fake document
