A female computer engineer was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday (January 13) over allegations of sharing intimate images of her former partner on social media.
According to Aruna newspaper, police said the suspect is a 25-year-old computer engineer residing in Kandarmadam, Jaffna.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a young man from Jaffna with the CID’s Cyber Crimes Division, alleging that nude photographs of him had been circulated in a WhatsApp group by his former girlfriend.
Investigations carried out by the Northern Province unit of the division confirmed that the images had been shared by the complainant’s former partner. Police also revealed that the suspect had been in a romantic relationship with the complainant about five years ago.
Following the end of the relationship, the suspect is alleged to have acted out of resentment and emotional distress by releasing the photographs as an act of revenge.
The woman was produced before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court and was subsequently released on bail.
