Christmas gifts could earn Aussies $1 billion

Australians could collectively earn nearly $1 billion this festive season by selling unwanted gifts, according to new research.

E-commerce giant eBay revealed that, on average, Australians received two unwanted gifts each during last year’s holiday season.

With the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, 52% of Australians have either sold or plan to sell unwanted gifts to generate extra income this year.

Selling unwanted Christmas presents has become a practical way for Australians to offset financial pressures, potentially adding $1 billion to their wallets.

Research shows that the trend of reselling unwanted gifts is growing, with more than half of Australians embracing the opportunity to make money during the festive season.

Younger generations are at the forefront of the trend, with 58% of Generation Z and 57% of millennials actively reselling unwanted gifts.

According to eBay’s data, fashion and tech emerged as the most popular categories for unwanted gifts listed online after Christmas 2023.

Post-Christmas 2023, eBay recorded four fashion items being listed every minute and one tech item every two minutes.

Millennials and Gen Z are driving the resale market, with fashion and tech topping the list of unwanted gifts put up for sale.

The post-holiday season saw a surge in online listings, with younger Australians leading the charge and fashion and tech dominating the resale platforms.
