The opening gala of the 2026 “Happy Chinese New Year” cultural events in Sri Lanka was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, marking the start of a series of celebrations ahead of the traditional Chinese holiday.
Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China, the gala featured artists and performers from Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The troupe presented authentic Bai ethnic performances, including songs, dances, and musical renditions using traditional instruments.
The event was attended by around 1,200 guests, including Speaker of the House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, senior Sri Lankan government officials, Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka, and members of the public.
In his address, Ambassador Qi noted that 2026 is the Chinese Year of the Horse, symbolizing endeavor, loyalty, and success in Chinese culture—values that resonate with Sri Lanka’s spirit of optimism and diligence. He wished both nations greater accomplishments in the new year and continued progress in their national development.
Speaker Wickramaratne praised the long-standing history of cultural exchange between Sri Lanka and China, adding that the performances vividly showcased the joy and deep cultural significance of the traditional Chinese festival.
Beyond the opening gala, the 2026 cultural events will include performances, parades, and other activities at locations such as Colombo Port City, the Hambantota International Conference Centre, and the historic Gangaramaya Temple area.
