China’s Ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, has left Canberra after more than four years in the role, marking a new chapter in China-Australia relations.
Mr Xiao said bilateral ties had recovered from a difficult period and described the relationship as achieving a “comprehensive turnaround.”
His posting began during one of the lowest points in relations, following China’s trade restrictions on Australian exports including coal, barley and wine.
The ambassador also faced criticism over comments linked to Taiwan, including remarks that were widely interpreted as suggesting a “re-education” process after possible reunification.
During his tenure, Australia and China worked to restore communication channels while continuing to manage major differences over security, trade and regional issues.
The departure of Xiao Qian is now drawing attention to the future direction of Australia-China diplomatic relations and Beijing’s next appointment in Canberra.
