China, Sri Lanka vow deeper cooperation at Lunar New Year reception

China’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations as the Chinese community in Colombo celebrated the Lunar New Year at a Spring Festival reception.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Qi stated that ties between the two countries have entered a “new phase of development,” highlighting cooperation in key sectors such as ports, agriculture, the digital economy, tourism, infrastructure, trade, investment, and education. He described major projects including the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port as thriving hubs contributing fresh momentum to Sri Lanka’s growth.

Qi also referred to China as a valued and trusted partner, noting Beijing’s support during recent adverse weather events and its ongoing engagement in Sri Lanka’s development efforts.

Foreign Minister Herath, speaking at the reception, expressed appreciation for China’s continued partnership and said Sri Lanka remains grateful for the steady support extended by the People’s Republic of China. He added that Sri Lanka aims to deepen ties in a mutually beneficial and transparent manner that reflects the shared aspirations of both nations.

The reception also featured cultural performances, including Tai Chi demonstrations and Sichuan opera face-changing, showcasing the growing presence of Chinese cultural traditions in Sri Lanka.
