China has reaffirmed its strong commitment to cracking down on telecommunications and online fraud, while pledging to further strengthen law enforcement cooperation with Sri Lanka.
In a statement, China said it is closely monitoring recent developments in Sri Lanka, including the arrest of several foreign suspects involved in online fraud, among them Chinese nationals. It expressed full support for Sri Lankan authorities in taking firm legal action while ensuring the protection of suspects’ lawful rights.
China noted that telecommunications and online fraud have expanded rapidly worldwide, posing a serious global threat. It highlighted its ongoing cooperation with countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and the United Arab Emirates, where joint efforts have led to the dismantling of numerous criminal networks. However, some groups have since shifted operations to other parts of Southeast Asia.
The statement observed that Sri Lanka’s advanced telecommunications infrastructure, strategic location, relatively relaxed visa policies and welcoming environment have made it a target for certain transnational fraud groups, contributing to a rise in such incidents.
China said it attaches great importance to this trend and is maintaining close coordination with Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies. Joint efforts have already led to the arrest of several Chinese nationals in 2024, who were later repatriated in batches in 2025.
Reaffirming the longstanding partnership between the two countries, China expressed readiness to further enhance cooperation through joint investigations and strengthened coordination to combat cross-border crimes, including online and telecommunications fraud.
It added that such collaboration would help protect the safety and property of citizens in both countries while fostering a secure environment for deeper bilateral cooperation.
