China caps beef imports, dealing blow to Australian cattle farmers

Australian cattle farmers have suffered a setback after China announced it would impose a cap on beef imports in a move aimed at protecting its domestic producers.

Although COVID-era trade disruptions between Australia and China had largely eased in recent years, the beef industry is facing fresh challenges in 2026. Cattle Australia Chair Garry Edwards said the decision could force around one billion dollars’ worth of Australian beef to be redirected to alternative markets.

Under the new measure, China has begun limiting overseas beef imports, with any volumes exceeding the cap subject to a 55 per cent tax. Edwards noted that large quantities of low-priced beef redirected from the United States into China had negatively affected Chinese producers, prompting the move.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Australian government was in discussions with China regarding the new tariffs, stressing that Australia was not being singled out and that the policy applied broadly to all exporting countries.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley argued that the government should have acted to prevent Australian farmers from being affected, while Nationals Leader David Littleproud urged the Prime Minister and Trade Minister Don Farrell to make urgent representations to authorities in Beijing.

Despite the impact on exporters, the policy could result in an unexpected benefit for Australian consumers. Edwards said surplus beef that cannot be sold overseas may be redirected to the domestic market, potentially leading to lower prices.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Albanese expressed confidence that global demand for Australian beef would remain strong, noting that other international markets may absorb the redirected supply.
