Chikungunya cases surge, highest infections reported

Sri Lanka is witnessing a rise in Chikungunya cases, with the highest number of infections reported across the country.

Dr. Deepal Perera, a pediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, explained that Chikungunya is transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes.

Symptoms of Chikungunya, including high fever, severe joint pain, skin rash, and muscle pain, typically appear two to three days after infection.

Dr. Perera also warned that joint pain caused by the virus could last for an extended period.

Health authorities have noted an increase in mosquito populations during the rainy season and urged the public to take additional precautions to reduce mosquito breeding.

Dr. Perera further stated that there is no specific treatment for Chikungunya, making prevention crucial.
