The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has issued a warning about the possible spread of Chikungunya in several parts of Sri Lanka.
Dr. Chinthana Perera stated that the disease is currently spreading in Kaduwela, Gothatuwa, and Battaramulla in Colombo, and in crowded areas of the Gampaha District.
Sri Lanka previously experienced major Chikungunya outbreaks in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
Common symptoms include fever, body aches, and joint pain with swelling, which can sometimes persist for weeks.
The disease is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito—the same mosquito that spreads dengue fever.
Dr. Perera clarified that Chikungunya is not transmitted from person to person.
The public has been urged to stay alert, especially vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children, and people with chronic illnesses.
Health authorities are calling for mosquito control measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
