The Chief Prelates of Sri Lanka’s three main Buddhist Chapters have written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, voicing concern over government initiatives such as LGBTQ tourism promotion, which they warned could undermine cultural values and lead to serious social consequences.
In their letter, the Mahanayakes stressed that attempts to promote tourism through LGBTQ-related activities could result in “serious social catastrophes.”
They also objected to proposed amendments to the Penal Code, particularly the move to introduce an offence of corporal punishment, saying it may bring negative outcomes.
The Prelates urged the President to reconsider these measures to ensure the protection of the country’s cultural and religious traditions.
