A private security officer accused of video recording the vehicle carrying Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena was remanded until September 10 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama yesterday.
Police informed the court that the incident took place when the Chief Justice, accompanied by his security officers, visited his residence at Gregory’s Road, Colombo, and was returning. Investigators from the Cinnamon Gardens Police said the suspect had filmed the Chief Justice’s vehicle and the security convoy using his mobile phone.
The Chief Justice’s security personnel apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the Cinnamon Gardens Police. Police further requested the court to direct the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to examine the mobile phone to determine whether the footage had been shared with others and for what purpose.
The court was also informed that prison authorities must submit a psychiatric report on the suspect.
During proceedings, the suspect’s counsel argued that the recording was done on behalf of his employer and insisted his client had no criminal intent. The defence further requested bail for the suspect.
However, after considering all submissions, the Chief Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded until 10th of September .
