Charith Abeysinghe has claimed that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe could have prevented the National People’s Power (NPP) from securing its current 159-seat parliamentary majority if he had accepted a proposal by Basil Rajapaksa to hold a General Election before the Presidential Election.

According to Abeysinghe, such a move may have altered the political landscape and even created an opportunity for Wickremesinghe to return to the presidency.
He further argued that if Local Government Elections had been held on schedule during Wickremesinghe’s administration, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) could have emerged victorious at that stage.
Abeysinghe made the remarks while commenting on past electoral decisions and their impact on the country’s current political balance.
