Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga has released a statement on the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who remains in remand custody.

She expressed grave concern over the timing of the arrest, noting that it came at a stage when the investigation was nearly complete.

Kumaratunga warned that the move reflects a calculated attack on the foundations of Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions.

“This is not merely about one individual or political party, but about the very rights and freedoms of society as a whole,” she stressed.

She further stated that she fully opposes such actions and urged all political leaders to resist attempts that undermine democracy.
