Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne was released on Monday on personal bail of 1 million rupees after a woman filed a complaint claiming he fathered her child and refused to take responsibility, court officials said.
The complaint was filed by Sewwandhi Senarathna, who identified herself as an airline pilot. She alleged that she had a sexual relationship with Karunaratne, which resulted in the birth of a child, and requested a DNA test to confirm paternity.
Karunaratne’s attorney, Asela Rekawa, opposed the request, stating that his client denies the allegation and claiming that the complainant was in a relationship with an Indian national during the same period. He submitted a photograph to the court to support this claim.
Rekawa argued that the court does not have the authority to order a DNA test and emphasized that the burden of proof lies with the complainant, not the accused.
The magistrate granted bail to Karunaratne and scheduled the next hearing for January 30, 2026.
