Chamara Sampath to face questioning in major phosphate deal scandal

A court has granted permission to record a statement from MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake in connection with a controversial phosphate deal that allegedly caused a loss of Rs. 2,700 million to the government during the previous administration.

This decision followed the submission of a B report detailing the alleged financial irregularities.

Police confirmed that the statement will be obtained from the MP while he remains in custody at the prison.

Meanwhile, the CID’s Illegal Assets Division arrested Naveen Dhanesh, an advisor linked to the deal, during a raid in Nawala.

During the search of his residence, authorities recovered an unlicensed pistol, a licensed 9mm pistol with 20 rounds of ammunition, and an SLG Zero 123 repeater firearm.

Investigations are focused on the alleged illegal sale of 30,000 metric tons of rock phosphate by Lanka Phosphate Company to three private firms, resulting in significant losses to the state.
