Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe demonstrated a digital payment using LANKAQR at a promotional campaign in Hambantota last week.
The Central Bank emphasized the importance of modern technology and digital payments in driving economic growth and improving citizens’ quality of life, urging greater involvement from government institutions, businesses, and financial sectors.
While digital payment facilities are available, the Central Bank noted that there is potential to simplify the processes and technology used by financial institutions to better serve all segments of society.
As part of efforts to encourage the use of digital payments, the Central Bank launched a campaign under the theme ‘Shaping the Future through Digital Transactions’ in Hambantota, marking the first in a series of initiatives.
The event attracted financial institutions, telecommunication providers, public officials, and small businesses, and served as a platform to promote digital payment registration and usage.
The Central Bank highlighted the need for similar awareness campaigns across the island to enhance financial inclusion, particularly in remote areas, and facilitate the adoption of digital payment methods like LANKAQR.
