The death of an Assistant Director of the Ministry of Finance’s Department of External Resources, who had been interdicted over the alleged misappropriation of USD 2.5 million in Treasury funds, has been officially ruled a suicide.

According to the Sri Lanka Police, a panel of Judicial Medical Consultants concluded that all injuries found on the body were self-inflicted, confirming the cause of death as suicide.
The official, identified as Ranga Rajapaksa, was discovered dead at his residence in Kuliyapitiya on Friday (30). His body was found in the garden after his daughter noticed him lying there and alerted other family members.
Police officers responding to the scene observed bloodstains nearby and reported multiple injuries on the body, including cuts to one leg and an injury to an arm. A small knife was also recovered from the vicinity.
The incident was initially treated as a suspicious death, with investigations launched to determine whether it was a case of homicide, suicide, or an accident.
The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate conducted an on-site inquiry, after which the body was sent to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
A four-member panel of Judicial Medical Consultants was later appointed to carry out the examination, ultimately determining that the death was self-inflicted.
