Cardinal Ranjith urges Sri Lankans to protect heritage, reject foreign ideologies

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has emphasized that Sri Lanka should not become subservient to the conditions imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or foreign nations, warning that such dependency undermines the nation’s dignity and self-respect.

He made these remarks during a thanksgiving service held today (09) at the Archbishop’s House in Colombo to mark the 20th anniversary of TV Derana. The event was attended by TV Derana Founder and Parliamentarian Dilith Jayaweera, Deputy Chairman Laksiri Wickremage, Executive Director/COO Madhawa Madawala, members of the Board of Directors, senior management, and staff.

During the Divine Liturgy, Cardinal Ranjith commended TV Derana for its sincere service to the nation by keeping the public informed and promoting understanding among citizens. He extended his appreciation to the network’s founder and leadership for their contribution to national discourse.

The Cardinal further stated that many values regarded as moral and civilized today are rooted in Sri Lanka’s own cultural heritage. He stressed the importance of aligning national progress with this heritage, noting that while external influences can be valuable, Sri Lankans must carefully discern what is beneficial rather than accept everything from abroad.

With a civilization spanning over 2,600 years, Sri Lanka possesses the wisdom to identify what is right and relevant to its own context, he said. True progress, the Cardinal added, does not lie in imitation but in finding indigenous paths suited to the country’s needs.

He concluded by emphasizing that the responsibility of national advancement rests not only with political leaders but with every citizen, urging collective effort in safeguarding the country’s heritage and dignity.
