Cannes film festival imposes ban on nudity on red carpet

The 78th Cannes Film Festival, which begins yesterday ( 13th of May), has officially banned nudity and excessively voluminous clothing on the red carpet.

The new rules follow past controversies, including a topless protest in 2022 and Bianca Censori’s transparent outfit at the Grammys earlier this year.

In line with French law and the festival’s institutional values, Cannes issued a statement clarifying that full nudity will not be tolerated on the red carpet.

The festival emphasized that the intent is not to regulate fashion broadly, but to maintain decorum in line with its longstanding traditions.

Access may be denied to individuals wearing outfits that obstruct guest movement or complicate seating in screening venues.

Voluminous dresses with long trains, such as those worn in past editions, may now be restricted under the updated policy.

The guidelines do not specify whether mid-sized outfits like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie-pink gown would violate the dress code.

For security reasons, tote bags, backpacks, and large bags are also banned during gala screenings.

The festival cited logistical issues, stating that oversized garments hinder traffic flow and complicate seating arrangements.

This year’s Cannes Festival runs until May 24 and will see appearances from Indian celebrities including Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Karan Johar.
