Former Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said the current calls for Provincial Council elections are aimed only at showing public opposition to the government.

He noted that no Member of Parliament has raised the issue in Parliament or outside, arguing that there is no genuine demand for such elections.
Deshapriya stressed that the call for Provincial Council polls cannot be justified unless the people are first made to understand their necessity.
He expressed these views while speaking at a seminar in Colombo on the subject of Provincial Council elections.
