Proposals have been discussed to introduce cable car systems at several major tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, including Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s tourism infrastructure.
The matter was reviewed at a Tourism Task Force meeting held on April 28 at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), long-standing requests from stakeholders to develop a cable car project near Sri Pada were examined during the meeting. Kikiliyamana and Ella have also been identified as potential sites for similar tourism developments.
Officials emphasized the importance of conducting feasibility studies, obtaining necessary approvals, and reviewing technical and environmental reports before moving forward with implementation.
In a separate discussion, attention was also given to broader tourism facilitation measures, including a proposed visa-free facility for citizens of 40 countries, which is expected to be introduced from May 25 to boost tourist arrivals.
The meeting further reviewed progress on improving sanitation facilities in 19 national parks, including Yala National Park, where maintenance of existing facilities has already been outsourced and plans are underway to install new systems.
Officials also explored the concept of establishing a dedicated tourism zone along the coastal stretch from Colpetty, aimed at enhancing visitor safety and attractions, with expectations of drawing between 2,000 and 3,000 tourists.
