The Cabinet has approved Rs. 25 million for 2025 to support temporary care homes for female victims of violence.
The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs currently operates 10 care home centers across Sri Lanka, including one in each of Gampaha, Ratnapura, Monaragala, Colombo, Matara, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu, and Jaffna, as well as two in Anuradhapura.
A new temporary care home is set to be established in the Nuwara-Eliya district starting January 2025.
The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs directly covers some administrative and maintenance costs of the care centers, while other expenses are handled by women’s welfare organizations.
From 2020 to the second quarter of 2024, organizations have provided protection to 2,852 women victims at a cost of Rs. 60.35 million.
However, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has only received Rs. 37.69 million in provisions, leaving Rs. 22 million in unpaid bills.
Considering these factors, the Cabinet has approved the allocation of Rs. 25 million for 2025 and provisions for future years in the annual budget.
