Cabinet approves 4,000 daily passport issuances

The Cabinet of Sri Lanka has approved increasing the daily issuance of passports to 4,000 to address current delays.

To support this initiative, retired officers from the Department of Immigration and Emigration will be recruited on a contract basis, and public servants will be temporarily assigned with the Ministry of Public Administration’s approval.

Additionally, the procurement process for 1.1 million blank “P” category passports without chips has commenced based on recommendations from an Expert Committee.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration will operate 24 hours a day to achieve the new daily target.

The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs and approved by the Cabinet.
