The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has firmly denied media reports claiming that a maximum retail price for salt was agreed upon during a meeting with the Salt Manufacturers’ Association of Sri Lanka.
In an official statement, the CAA clarified that no such discussion took place and refuted claims made by the association suggesting otherwise.
However, the independently functioning Consumer Affairs Council did hold a meeting with the association to gather views on potentially setting a maximum price, and any decision made will be formally communicated to the CAA for further action.
The CAA also warned that legal action will be taken against importers and manufacturers releasing salt without proper labeling or pricing, and urged merchants to keep formal invoices with accurate supplier information to avoid penalties.
