The health department of Victoria has issued a warning about Buruli ulcer, a bacterial disease transmitted by mosquito bites.
The disease, caused by Mycobacterium ulcers, leads to skin infections that develop into serious sores if untreated.
While Buruli is not spread between humans, mosquitoes play a crucial role in its transmission.
As of 17th of December 2024, 334 cases have been reported in Victoria, with affected regions including Mornington Peninsula, Bellarine Peninsula, and Southeastern Bayside suburbs.
Infectious disease expert Mehrab Hossin emphasized that while Buruli ulcers are serious, they can be effectively treated with a combination of antibiotics over three to four months.
Residents are advised to wear protective clothing and avoid mosquito-prone areas to reduce the risk of infection, especially with potential spread to New South Wales.
