Burden-free education for grades 1 and 6 from 2026: PM

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that teacher recruitment in the past had been poorly managed, and emphasized that in the future, teachers would be recruited based strictly on actual vacancies.

She made these remarks while addressing public gatherings in Polgahawela, Weerambugedara, Piduruwella, Pillesse, Mawathagama, and Paragahadeniya in the Kurunegala District, according to the Prime Minister’s Media Division.

Dr. Amarasuriya further explained that the government is actively identifying challenges across all sectors, proposing solutions, and appointing skilled officials to implement these initiatives. She noted that the upcoming election is crucial for advancing these projects at the rural level.

She stressed that just as the higher levels of politics must be free from corruption and fraud, it is equally important to ensure cleanliness and integrity at the grassroots level.

Commenting on political rumors, she stated that suggestions about Ranil Wickremesinghe assuming the presidency in August and Sajith Premadasa in December are baseless and should not distract the public from their goals.

Dr. Amarasuriya urged people to stay focused on building a competent leadership team to continue the journey of good governance.

Highlighting the transformation in political culture since Anura Kumara’s appointment, she said the government has worked tirelessly to reduce the burden on the people, preventing misuse of power and irresponsible conduct by politicians.

She added that unnecessary expenses, wastage, and corruption have been halted, and currently, no misconduct allegations could be made against the administration.

The Prime Minister also noted the significant number of visitors to Kandy, and for the first time, Muslim places of worship and business establishments remained open to support pilgrims visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, reflecting a growing sense of communal harmony.

Turning to education, Dr. Amarasuriya pointed out that although children possess knowledge, they face major challenges in developing the skills and attitudes needed for the modern world.

She explained that the failure to integrate knowledge, skills, and values in the education system has caused serious social issues, widening the gap between “popular” and “less popular” schools.

She highlighted the problem of Advanced Level students not attending classes regularly and the rising dropout rate among male students.

Finally, she stressed that education must not only impart knowledge but also cultivate virtues and spiritual values essential for society’s progress.
