Buddhist monk donates 20 acres to resettle displaced families

Venerable Aluthgama Mangala Thera, Chief Incumbent of the Maddeketiya Gokarella Sangamu Raja Maha Viharaya, has donated a 20-acre plot of temple land to support the resettlement of families displaced by Cyclone Ditwah.

The official documents for this donation were formally handed over to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during a meeting at the Kurunegala District Secretariat yesterday (07).

The donated land has been allocated specifically for the construction of new homes for families who lost their residences in the disaster. President Dissanayake expressed deep appreciation for the contribution, highlighting that support from the clergy and public is essential for the success of national recovery efforts.

During the discussion, the President stressed that unauthorized constructions had significantly worsened the impact of the disaster and stated that such structures will not be allowed in the future. He added that legal regulations will be strengthened to prevent similar occurrences.

President Dissanayake also announced that a dedicated unit will be established under the proposed Reconstruction Presidential Task Force. This unit will focus on developing legal policies and implementing long-term solutions to ensure safe and regulated housing development.
