World-renowned Nepalese climber Nirmal “Nims” Purja has been confirmed dead in a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.
Purja, 43, was leading a team of 10 climbers when an avalanche swept through Broad Peak.
He rose to international fame in 2019 after setting the world record for climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in just over six months, a feat that was featured in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible.”
A former Gurkha and British Special Forces soldier, Purja was widely respected for his extraordinary climbing achievements and rescue operations in the Himalayas.
The tragedy has shocked the global mountaineering community, with tributes pouring in from around the world.
