British HC meets first Buddhist monk to study at Oxford in years

British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Andrew Patrick, recently hosted Ven. Wadigala Samitharathana Thero, the first Buddhist monk in many years to study at the University of Oxford.

In a post on ‘X’, the High Commissioner celebrated Ven. Samitharathana’s journey, highlighting the power of education and the enduring ties between Sri Lanka and England.

In December 2024, it was announced that St Cross College at Oxford welcomed Ven. Samitharathana as the first Sri Lankan Buddhist monk to attend the university in 105 years.

Ven. Samitharathana, a Glorisun Scholar, is pursuing an MPhil in Buddhist Studies, marking a historic milestone for both Sri Lanka and Oxford.

St Cross College is renowned for its diverse academic community, and this achievement stands as a testament to the long-standing educational exchange between the two nations.

The last Sri Lankan Buddhist monk to study at Oxford was Venerable Suriyagoda Sumangala, who received a scholarship in 1919, enrolling at Harris Manchester College.
