A police officer has been arrested near Ragama Hospital for accepting a bribe of Rs. 200,000, according to the Bribery Commission.
The officer was apprehended near the hospital’s second gate while receiving the bribe, which had been demanded in exchange for not filing a case over a drug possession incident.
Two police officers were allegedly involved in the scheme. They had previously taken an initial payment of Rs. 20,000 and had returned to collect the remaining Rs. 180,000 when officers from the Bribery Commission carried out the sting operation.
One suspect managed to flee during the raid, while the other was arrested on the spot.
Investigations are underway to apprehend the escaped officer and identify any other parties involved in the bribery attempt.
