Brazil donates water purification units to aid Sri Lanka’s flood relief efforts

The Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil has donated 10 high-capacity water purification units to support Sri Lanka’s flood relief and recovery efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said.

The ministry said the donation was formally handed over to Minister Vijitha Herath by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Brazilian Embassy in Sri Lanka, Ms. Monica Maria Meirelles Nasser, on January 9, 2026, at the ministry’s headquarters.

Each unit can purify up to 10,000 litres of water per day, together providing safe drinking water to around 7,000 people daily. In addition to emergency use, the units are designed for long-term deployment in public facilities such as schools and hospitals.

Minister Herath thanked Brazil for the timely assistance, saying the donation reflects the strong bilateral ties between the two countries and their shared commitment to humanitarian cooperation.
