Western Australian farmers are on high alert after a second case of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus was confirmed in wild birds near Esperance, raising fears about its potential impact on the nation’s poultry industry.

In response to the growing threat, poultry producer Ingham’s has imposed a complete lockdown across its Western Australian farms and processing facilities, introducing strict biosecurity measures to prevent the virus from reaching commercial flocks.

Authorities have stressed that no cases have been detected in commercial poultry, but experts warn the situation remains serious as investigations continue into whether the virus has spread among local wildlife.

Nearly 60 reports of sick or dead birds have been received since the first detection, prompting extensive testing and surveillance across affected regions.

Farmers fear a wider outbreak could threaten poultry production, wildlife populations, and egg supplies, although officials say Australia’s food supply remains safe and current biosecurity measures are working.

The federal and state governments are now working closely with industry leaders to contain the virus, while urging the public to avoid contact with sick or dead birds and report any sightings immediately.
