Bilateral tariff talks with U.S. set to begin in Washington

A new round of discussions between Sri Lanka and the United States on U.S.-imposed tariffs began today in Washington, D.C., with the aim of strengthening bilateral trade relations.

Sri Lanka is being represented by a delegation led by Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Harshana Suriyapperuma, following an official invitation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

The talks will address key economic issues, including ways to improve trade ties and reduce tariff burdens on Sri Lankan exports.

In preparation for the negotiations, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a high-level meeting with senior officials to assess economic strategies and align goals for the discussions.

The meeting highlighted the need for a unified and strategic approach to protect national interests and secure long-term trade benefits.

The U.S.-Sri Lanka trade dialogue is expected to continue into tomorrow, signaling the importance both nations place on resolving tariff challenges and enhancing economic cooperation.
