Police have denied reports that a new law has been enacted in Arugam Bay banning the wearing of bikinis in public places by locals or foreigners.
The controversy arose after a social media post, allegedly from the “People of the Local Community in Arugam Bay,” circulated claiming that bikinis were no longer allowed in the area.
The post, which appeared to be a community message, urged visitors to respect local culture by avoiding bikinis in public spaces.
However, the Officer-in-Charge of Pottuvil Police confirmed to the media that no such ban exists and that the message was shared by a private individual.
He added that an investigation is underway to determine the origin of the post.
Arugam Bay remains one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist destinations, renowned for its scenic beaches and world-class surfing waves.
The area continues to attract both local and international visitors, with no restrictions on typical beachwear such as bikinis.
