Biden credits his framework for Gaza deal, trump claims credit

U.S. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump both claimed credit for a ceasefire deal between Gaza and Israel that had been months in the making.

Biden highlighted that the deal largely followed a proposal he made in May, and he acknowledged the contributions of his team while emphasizing the transition to the incoming administration.

Trump, on the other hand, quickly took to social media to assert his influence over the deal, claiming that his administration’s “historic victory” in November had paved the way for peace and the safety of Americans and allies.

He pointed to his envoy, Steve Witkoff, who participated in the final stages of negotiations in Doha alongside Biden’s envoy, Brett McGurk.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden had wanted the Trump administration to be involved in the process due to the incoming administration’s role in implementing the ceasefire.

Biden further expressed hope that the deal could eventually lead to a future of normalization between Israel and its Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, and a potential Palestinian state.

The deal comes after the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel, which led to significant casualties and ongoing violence.
