Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) is set to make history by staging its 2026–27 season opener in India, marking the first time a foreign franchise T20 league has hosted a match in the country.

The opening clash between the Melbourne Renegades and defending champions Perth Scorchers will be played in Chennai on December 12, highlighting the growing cricket partnership between Australia and India.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the move, saying stronger sporting ties with India will also help boost trade, tourism, and investment between the two nations.

Cricket Australia believes taking the BBL to India will expand the league’s global audience and strengthen its presence in the world’s biggest cricket market.

The decision comes as Cricket Australia explores new investment opportunities following a reported financial deficit, while also seeking to improve the league’s long-term competitiveness.

BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson said the historic match is expected to become the most-watched Australian domestic league game ever, reflecting the strong passion for cricket shared by fans in both Australia and India.
