The interview with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Al Jazeera International took a heated turn as several pressing topics were discussed, including Sri Lanka’s ongoing struggles, the economic crisis, and the Easter attacks.
Wickremesinghe provided strong responses to the journalist’s questions, particularly regarding the Catholic Church’s criticism of the investigation into the Easter attacks.
He stated that Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith was unwilling to accept the committee’s conclusions and emphasized that accepting the committee’s recommendations was a matter for Parliament, not the Cardinal.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference expressed concerns about possible external involvement in the attacks, but Wickremesinghe maintained that the investigation’s findings stood firm.
Additionally, when questioned about his role in maintaining law and order during the 2022 power struggle, Wickremesinghe asserted that upon becoming President, he took steps to restore stability.
He defended his actions, stating that the rebels’ attempt to seize Parliament was not an act of democracy.
