Bahrain mandates vaccine for migrant workers

Bahrain’s Ministry of Health has made the Meningococcal vaccine mandatory for all foreign workers entering the country to prevent the spread of meningococcal disease.

In response, the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) confirmed that Sri Lankan workers traveling to Bahrain must also comply with this requirement.

The vaccination program for Sri Lankans will be coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Bahrain, in partnership with Bahraini health authorities and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Meningococcal disease is a severe bacterial infection that can be fatal if untreated. Given its serious health risks, the GCC has prioritized meningococcal vaccination to protect migrant workers and curb outbreaks.

This new measure aligns with Bahrain’s broader public health efforts to safeguard workers’ health and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Bahrain remains a key employment destination for Sri Lankans, with over 4,000 migrating there in 2024.
