Authorities urged to simplify imports of drug testing equipment

MP Najith Indika Urges Streamlining of Drug Test Equipment Imports.

MP Najith Indika, Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection, has emphasized that the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board should take the lead in streamlining the procurement process and removing legal barriers related to importing equipment used for roadside drug testing of drivers.

These matters were discussed during a recent meeting of the Committee in Parliament on November 20, chaired by MP Najith Indika. The Committee reviewed the progress of the 2025 budget proposals and the implementation of special projects under the Ministry of Public Security & Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils & Local Government.

Officials from the Sri Lanka Police Narcotics Bureau highlighted challenges in conducting roadside drug tests due to the lack of essential equipment.

The Committee Chair stressed that the government has prioritized eliminating drug abuse and underlined the importance of regulating drivers operating vehicles under the influence of drugs. He further noted that the necessary equipment must be readily available, and legal obstacles affecting their procurement and importation should be addressed promptly.

Police officials also reported notable progress in implementing budgeted drug prevention programmes. Additionally, representatives from the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board briefed the Committee on achievements made under their oversight.
