Authorities urged to crack down on foreigners illegally operating businesses in Arugam Bay

Local business owners in Arugam Bay have raised concerns over the growing presence of Israeli nationals who, despite arriving on tourist visas, are actively engaging in business activities.

Arugam Bay, known as a premier surfing destination in Sri Lanka, has seen a significant influx of Israeli tourists in recent months.

Many tourism-related services in the area, such as guesthouses, surf schools, and tour operations, are reportedly being run by Israeli nationals, which has led to a decline in income for local entrepreneurs.

A recent investigation by Ada Derana confirmed that some foreign nationals, particularly Israelis, are operating businesses illegally under tourist visas.

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), Buddhika Hewawasam, stated that legal action has already been taken against several foreigners involved in such activities.

Local business owners are now urging authorities to intensify enforcement and take prompt action to protect the livelihoods of Sri Lankan residents in Arugam Bay.

The SLTDA acknowledged that Arugam Bay’s appeal as a surfing hotspot continues to attract large numbers of international visitors, making it essential to ensure fair and lawful business practices in the area.
