Australia’s South-East Braces for hottest days in years as heatwave persists

As temperatures continue to soar with heatwave warnings issued across much of the country, some regions are set to experience their hottest day in more than five years. According to Weatherzone, temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C across a stretch of more than 3,500 kilometres, from southern Victoria to Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

While such conditions are typical for Australia’s north-west at this time of year, parts of the south-east are on track to record their hottest day since the Black Summer bushfires. Melbourne is forecast to reach 43°C this afternoon, making it the city’s hottest day in over five years.

The extreme heat is set to persist, with Mildura in Victoria’s north-west expected to reach 45°C and Renmark in South Australia forecast to soar to 46°C. Authorities have warned that the prolonged heat poses significant risks to public health and infrastructure across the south-east, urging residents to take necessary safety precautions as the heatwave continues through the weekend.

The hot, dry, and windy conditions have also led to catastrophic fire warnings being issued for Victoria’s Wimmera, North Central, Northern Country, and South West districts. Extreme fire danger is forecast for other parts of Victoria, as well as areas of New South Wales and southern and large parts of South Australia.

In addition, gusty winds may trigger dry thunderstorms across parts of Victoria on Friday, producing little to no rainfall and increasing the risk of fire ignition as the storms move through.
