Australia’s 2025 snow season has kicked off with a bang as a powerful cold front sweeps across the southeast, delivering heavy snowfalls and icy temperatures.
Blizzard-like conditions over the weekend blanketed ski fields in New South Wales and Victoria, marking the strongest season start in years.
At Victoria’s Hotham Alpine Resort, 51cm of snow was recorded, with a video showing a man trudging through knee-deep powder going viral online.
Thredbo in NSW reported 26cm of snow on the ground, while Perisher showed peaks of around 35cm on its live snow cams.
“And just like that, winter 2025 is here!” Thredbo announced on social media, with forecasts predicting over 50cm of additional snow.
Meteorologist Jonathon How from the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed overnight totals including 25cm at Perisher, 32cm at Hotham, 26cm at Buller, and 37cm at Falls Creek.
Further snowfall is expected, with 10–20cm more likely for Perisher, Thredbo, and Charlotte Pass on Sunday.
Snow is also predicted to fall at lower altitudes, including parts of the Blue Mountains, Central Tablelands, and even towns like Oberon and Orange.
Dean Narramore, also from the Bureau, said the cold front originated well south of Australia, contributing to daytime highs remaining in the single digits.
Weatherzone’s Anthony Sharwood forecast up to 70cm of snow in higher resorts and 30cm in lower ones by Tuesday, promising a stellar week ahead for skiers and snowboarders.
