Australia’s net overseas migration has declined to its lowest level since 2022, according to new figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, signaling a significant shift in the nation’s population growth trends.

The data showed Australia’s population increased by 1.5 per cent over the year to December, reaching 27.8 million people, with the country surpassing the 28 million mark this month.

Population growth was driven by both natural increase and overseas migration, with 111,500 people added through births exceeding deaths, while net overseas migration contributed an additional 301,000 people.

Although migration remains a major contributor to population growth, the latest figure marks the lowest net migration level recorded since September 2022, reflecting the government’s efforts to gradually reduce migration numbers.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reaffirmed plans to bring annual migration down to 225,000, describing it as a balanced target that supports economic growth while easing pressure on housing and public services.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke said the government is focusing on skilled migration to address workforce shortages in critical sectors such as healthcare, aged care and construction, while continuing to reduce temporary visa and international student numbers.

The migration debate remains a key political issue, with opposition figures and critics arguing that migration levels are still placing significant pressure on housing affordability, rental markets and infrastructure across the country.
